We have Abraham for our father; for I say to you, that God is able of
these stones to raise up children to Abraham. (10)And already the axe
is laid to the root of the trees; therefore every tree that brings not
forth good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire. (11)I indeed
immerse you in water unto repentance; but he that comes after me is
mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to bear; he will
immerse you in the Holy Spirit and fire; (12)whose fan is in his hand,
and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor, and will gather
his wheat into the garner; but the chaff he will burn up with fire
unquenchable.
(13)Then Jesus comes from Galilee to the Jordan, to John, to be
immersed by him. (14)But John sought to hinder him, saying: I have
need to be immersed by thee, and dost thou come to me? (15)And Jesus
answering said to him: Suffer it now; for thus it becomes us to
fulfill all righteousness. Then he suffered him. (16)And having been
immersed, Jesus went up immediately from the water; and lo, the
heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending,
as a dove, and coming upon him. (17)And lo, a voice out of heaven,
saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
IV.
THEN Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted
by the Devil. (2)And having fasted forty days and forty nights, he
afterwards hungered. (3)And coming to him, the tempter said: If thou
art the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread.
(4)But he answering said: It is written, Man shall not live on bread
alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.
(5)Then the Devil takes him into the holy city, and sets him on the
pinnacle of the temple, (6)and says to him: If thou art the Son of
God, cast thyself down; for it is written:
He will give his angels command concerning thee;
And on their hands they will bear thee up,
Lest haply thou dash thy foot against a stone.
(7)Jesus said to him: Again it is written, Thou shalt not tempt the
Lord thy God.
(8)Again the Devil takes him into an exceedingly high mountain, and
shows him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; (9)and
says to him: All these things I will give thee, if thou wilt fall down
and worship me. (10)Then Jesus says to him: Get thee hence, Satan; for
it is written: Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt
