ny others, and laid them down at his feet, and he healed them;
(31)so that the multitudes wondered, when they saw the dumb speaking,
the maimed whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they
glorified the God of Israel.
(32)And Jesus, having called to him his disciples, said: I have
compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three
days, and have nothing to eat; and I will not dismiss them fasting,
lest they faint in the way. (33)And his disciples say to him: Whence
should we have so many loaves in the wilderness, as to fill so great a
multitude? (34)And Jesus says to them: How many loaves have ye? And
they said: Seven, and a few little fishes. (35)And he commanded the
multitudes to lie down on the ground. (36)And he took the seven loaves
and the fishes, and gave thanks, and broke, and gave to his disciples,
and the disciples to the multitude. (37)And they all ate, and were
filled. And they took up of the fragments that remained seven baskets
full. (38)And they who ate were four thousand men, besides women and
children. (39)And dismissing the multitudes, he entered into the ship,
and came into the borders of Magdala.
XVI.
AND the Pharisees and Sadducees came to him, and tempting desired him
to show them a sign from heaven. (2)And he answering said to them:
When it is evening, ye say: Fair weather! for the sky is red. (3)And
in the morning: A storm to-day! for the sky is red and lowering. Ye
know how to discern the face of the sky, but can ye not the signs of
the times?
(4)An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and no sign
shall be given to it, but the sign of Jonah. And he left them, and
departed.
(5)And coming to the other side, his disciples forgot to take bread.
(6)And Jesus said to them: Take heed, and beware of the leaven of the
Pharisees and Sadducees. (7)And they reasoned among themselves,
saying: Because we took no bread! (8)And Jesus knowing it said: Ye of
little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye took no
bread? (9)Do ye not yet understand, nor remember the five loaves of
the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? (10)Nor the seven
loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? (11)How
is it that ye do not understand, that I spoke not to you of bread?
But, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees! (12)Then
they understood, that he did not bid them beware of the leaven of
bread, but of the teaching of the
