It may be that the white blaze (or piebaldism)
represents merely a heterozygous condition, and that the trait is really
a recessive. The same argument applies to brachydactyly.

~Comparative Free Government~
BY JESSE MACY
Professor Emeritus of Political Science
AND
JOHN W. GANNAWAY
Professor of Political Science in Grinnell College
_Cloth, 8vo, $2.25_
The United States is made the basis for this study because it has been
in fact the pioneer in securing world recognition for free government,
and it is the originator of the Presidential type. The first part of
"Comparative Free Government" is devoted to a somewhat detailed
description of the organization and processes of government in the
United States, together with a brief comparative study of selected South
American republics. The second part is devoted chiefly to a study of the
cabinet type. England is given first place as the originator of the
system. The object of the book is to throw light upon the growth and
perfection of free government in all states rather than to make a
general comparison of governmental institutions. It is particularly
adapted to use as a text in college courses.

~Problems of Child Welfare~
By GEORGE B. MANGOLD, Ph.D.
Director of the School of Social Economy of Washington University
_Cloth, 8vo, $2.00_
Although this book is designed especially for use as a text in college
courses on philanthropy, it will also appeal to that growing class of
men and women who in a systematic way are endeavoring to acquaint
themselves with the various aspects of practical sociology. Much of the
constructive philanthropy of to-day must deal directly with the child,
the improvement of his conditions being the direct objective. Those
problems which affect children in an indirect way, whether in the field
of remedial or preventive philanthropy, are not treated. Under each
separate problem are discussed the causes and conditions, the machinery
of social betterment, and the plans and programme of improvement.
