Le gouvernement venait d'immoler deux partis a la fois. Le premier, celui
des ultra-revolutionnaires, etait veritablement redoutable, ou pouvait le
devenir; le second, celui des nouveaux moderes, ne l'etait pas. Sa
destruction n'etait donc pas necessaire, mais pouvait etre utile, pour
ecarter toute apparence de moderation. Le comite le frappa sans conviction,
par hypocrisie et par envie. Ce dernier coup etait difficile a porter; on
vit tout le comite hesiter, et Robespierre rentrer dans sa demeure, comme
aux jours de danger. Mais Saint-Just, soutenu par son courage et sa haine
jalouse, resta ferme au poste, ranima Hermann et Fouquier, effraya la
convention, lui arracha le decret de mort, et fit consommer le sacrifice.
Le dernier effort que doit faire une autorite pour devenir absolue est
toujours le plus difficile, il lui faut toute sa force pour vaincre la
